How to recharge DI resin

There has been a question or two about using brine to recharge resin on RC. I have not tried it because I cannot get my mind around the chemistry. Knowing that it takes a positive and negative ion to recharge resin and the acid and lye serve this purpose, I am not quite sure how the salt and bleach would work. They seem a much weaker chemical but I do not understand their positive and negative properties.
